A duck and wild mushroom pie from Devon has been crowned top of the class in the game pie category at the prestigious British Pie Awards.
The pie, by Little and Cull, beat off strong competition from 30 other entries to take home the gold and top of class award.
The category, sponsored by Eat Game, saw a wide range of fillings including venison, partridge, pheasant, wild boar as well as the duck which was the star of the show in the winning pie.
Such was the quality of the entries three pies from the category were awarded gold standard.
David Comrie and Son were commended for their Highland venison pie, while Baldy’s Pies also won gold for their Penny’s butchers venison pie.
It was one of ten separate awards, on the day, for Alexander Melling from Baldy’s Dark Kitchen in Wigan.
Paul Williamson, BASC head of land and wildlife management, who was part of the judging panel said: “The standard of pies at this year’s British Pie Awards was second to none and the judges had some very difficult decisions to make.
“It was great to see such creativity when it came to not only the flavours and fillings used but also the style the pie served.”
The company, who are the leading supplier of premium sous-vide and prepared meals, strongly believe that provenance is key to the quality products they offer and by working with local suppliers they can ensure full traceability in their supply chain.
Tom Harb-Little, executive chef and managing director of Little and Cull, added: “Our talented team of chefs at Little and Cull offer a bespoke development service to create dishes made to specific briefs from our customers.
“The duck and wild mushroom pie was created in collaboration with the development chef at Stonegate with the pie being considered for launch on their autumn menu.
“We’re delighted to have been awarded Gold and the Class Winner award and hope to see the product launch later this year.”
