In the second in our series of articles that spotlight the finalists of this year’s Eat Game Awards, which take place on Thursday, we take a closer look at the best game retailers.
Best Multiple Retailer – sponsored by British Game Assurance
This category is open to any retailer with more than five shops. Online nominations were collected from the public with the top 10 going forward to the public vote.
The three retailers below received the most votes and will be judged by our panel of experts for the final placings announced on the night.
Offering more game products each year including seasonal specials such as wild venison steaks and a mixed game box, with oven-ready pheasant and partridge, Aldi is a key retailer for the mass marketing of game.
Famous for some of the best ready meals and high-quality products, M&S has a limited but quality game on offer. Pigeon breasts, venison steaks and game sausages are available seasonally. And during the festive period, M&S offers premade products, such as venison wellington.
Often the best high street offering of British game, Waitrose continues to expand their range. They have consistently offered both oven-ready game and easy to eat pre-made products such as venison meatballs, burgers and sausages.
Best small retailer – sponsored by Fisher
This category is for those retailers with less than five stores that offer a range of game meat and game meat added value products for sale. Farmer’s market stalls and street food vendors selling game were also eligible to enter.
Again, all entries were nominated online by the general public with the top 10 going forward to the public vote.
The retailers below received the most votes and the winner will be determined by a mystery shopper visit, scored against set criteria.

Formed by Izzy Hosking out of her passion and love for shooting and hunting. Originally situated on Llechweddygarth Estate in the picturesque Mid Wales countryside, Pennant Valley Game is now part of Wild Welsh Meat Ltd, which also encompasses Izzy’s Butchers, a traditional village butcher’s shop in the nearby village of Llanrhaeadr Ym Mochnant.
